BRIEF HISTORY

Pavement Project began its activities in 2000, but its origins go back two years earlier at Lifewords. At that time, a study was undertaken on children living in at-risk situations in different countries.

Based on this research, conducted by psychologists, theologians, and educators, a deeper understanding of the pain and challenges faced by these children emerged. A methodology was then developed to help them overcome the barriers to their healthy development. As a result, the main tool of the Pavement Project, the Green Bag, was developed.

The Green Bag was designed as a one-to-one counselling session conducted in a safe, interactive environment by a trained educator. It uses games and Bible stories to help children in vulnerable situations share and process painful and traumatic experiences, fostering a deeper understanding of their self-worth and encouraging emotional and spiritual restoration.

This method encourages the open expression of trauma and emotions, allowing children to reflect on their experiences while identifying with biblical characters who overcame adversity.

More than 115,000 children and their family members have already taken part in the Green Bag experience. The result has been many inspiring stories of change and hope, stronger partner organisations, educators impacted by the transforming power of the Word of God, and committed volunteers who continue to multiply this work.
